Vivara

Europe’s market leader in nature conservation

Vivara develops and sells, among other things, bird feed, feeding systems, birdhouses, products for other garden animals, and animal-friendly plants. The products are developed in collaboration with nature conservation organizations, ensuring that product quality, animal welfare, and nature conservation remain top priorities. The international organization serves eleven countries and multiple partner online stores. In total, Vivara manages fourteen online stores.

Challenges in this project

Vivara underwent two major migrations in quick succession. First, the fourteen online stores were migrated from Magento 1.9 to Magento 2, which resulted in changes to all URLs. In late 2025 and early 2026, the switch to the Hyvä theme followed, resulting in the replacement of modules and further URL changes. Both migrations were carried out in phases: first the smaller online stores, and then the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom, so that lessons learned earlier could be applied to the most important markets.

In every country, Vivara competes with local providers that focus exclusively on a single market and are often less expensive. Vivara deliberately chooses products developed in collaboration with nature conservation organizations, with the needs and safety of animals as the top priority. For products such as hedgehog houses, for example, ventilation and construction can be key factors in ensuring responsible use. This commitment to quality must be clearly explained in the search results, whereas competitors sometimes focus primarily on price or an attractive design.

Nature and consumer interests vary across European markets. In the United Kingdom, people prefer different bird species and products than in the Netherlands or Germany, while Norway and France also have their own preferences. Content therefore cannot simply be translated: examples, terminology, product choices, and advice must be relatable and credible in each country.

Demand for wildlife conservation products fluctuates with temperature, precipitation, and animal behavior. Warm weather can reduce demand for birdseed and nest boxes while increasing demand for bird baths, whereas during cold spells, fat-based products become more important. Some of these seasonal patterns are predictable, but sudden weather changes make year-over-year comparisons and the prioritization of tasks more complex.

The international approach includes eleven Vivara online stores and additional partner online stores, which are managed by various store managers. SmartRanking also coordinates with the CMO, developers, and the external SEA agency. With so many markets and stakeholders involved, the project requires clear responsibilities, regular meetings, and short lines of communication to ensure that central improvements and local priorities are well aligned.

International SEO and GEO Project for Vivara

Since August 2024, SmartRanking has been Vivara’s regular SEO partner in Europe. In early 2026, GEO was added as a second focus area to the project. The partnership is centered around a single core ambition: to further expand organic market share and become the market leader in each country across both traditional search engines and AI models. This involves not only achieving top rankings, but also being mentioned more often than competitors, projecting a positive and expert brand image, and driving sustainable growth that contributes to Vivara’s nature conservation goals.

The Objectives

Vivara aims to systematically expand its organic market position in all relevant European countries and become the market leader in SEO in each country. This objective now extends beyond Google Search. Vivara also aims to be mentioned more frequently than competing brands in AI models and to be recognized there as an expert, reliable source for nature conservation products and nature advice. The website should assist consumers at every stage, from questions about biodiversity and animal species to choosing the right product. In this way, organic growth, brand awareness, and Vivara’s contribution to nature conservation are all interconnected.

The Approach for This Project

SmartRanking doesn’t treat SEO and GEO as a series of simple tweaks. The website and the user’s information needs are central, with technology, content, search quality, localization, and authority viewed as a single, integrated whole. For Vivara, this means that improvements are first developed centrally and then optimized for each country based on local search queries, competition, and the local target audience.

Migrating from a Strong Technical Foundation

SmartRanking worked closely with the developers to carry out both migrations in a controlled manner. The rollout began with the smaller online stores, allowing technical and process-related lessons learned to be incorporated before the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom—the most important markets—followed. A total of 336,000 URLs were migrated across both migrations. This included redirects, indexing, canonical URLs, hreflang, sitemaps, internal links, and removed or replaced modules.

First, optimize the uniform; then, localize it

SmartRanking works with Vivara to determine which improvements can be implemented centrally across all countries. This involves exchanging relevant data with the external SEA agency, so that insights from paid and organic search results reinforce one another. This is followed by country-specific decisions based on search behavior, competition, animal species, and commercial relevance. The optimization of the category pages is now approximately 95% complete. The next layer of content consists of product names, product information, navigation, menu layout, and the footer.

Building Authority Throughout the Entire Customer Journey

In addition to commercial categories, the strategy focuses explicitly on top-of-funnel questions about biodiversity, animal species, and practical nature advice. This includes information on hanging and cleaning birdhouses, seasonal feeding, and supporting various garden animals. In this way, Vivara provides substantive help to its target audience, builds the brand’s authority on these topics, and creates a larger, relevant audience that can be reached again through other channels.

E-E-A-T and Visibility in AI Models

SmartRanking focuses on clear expertise, reliable brand information, in-depth content, and consistent mentions on its own and external platforms. In early 2026, there was also a strong focus on GEO. To that end, SmartAI monitors, among other things, share of mention, brand sentiment, competitor activity, and visibility trends across various AI models.

A shared dashboard

Priorities are set each quarter in consultation with the store managers and Vivara’s CMO. A custom dashboard consolidates the most important SEO and GEO metrics, including average rankings, market share, above-the-fold visibility, CTR, and AI Share of Voice. The Vivara team can track the trends themselves and uses this same information for decision-making and coordination across countries.

The result achieved

During two consecutive platform migrations, SmartRanking continued its international organic growth while laying the groundwork for visibility in AI search. The results for August 2024 through September 2026 show that Vivara has strengthened its market position in several European countries:

  • 60.97% increase in visibility expected between August 2024 and September 2026
  • On average, the No. 1 market position in Europe since July 2026.
  • 336,000 URLs migrated across two migration projects and fourteen online stores.
  • 65% transparency in the evaluated AI models starting in August 2026.

The Next Step

In the next phase, the focus will be on product names, product pages, menus, and footers. SmartRanking also provides optimizations for local content by country and targets it specifically to the most important search terms in each market. This allows Vivara to maintain its leading market position, further increase its visibility in AI models, and increasingly align organic growth with its mission to protect nature close to home.
