What is Google Organic Shopping?

Google Organic Shopping refers to the free product listings in Googleโ€™s search results and on the Shopping tab. These organic listings (just like the paid version) include information such as the product name, image, price, availability, and seller.

How is this different from Paid Shopping? With these listings, you don’t pay per click. Instead, Google uses an algorithmโ€”rather than an auction systemโ€”to determine whether your products are displayed. Examples include:

  • The quality and completeness of your product feed
  • Structured Data on Your Website
  • Indexability of Your Product Pages
  • Relevance of Your Content

With Organic Shopping, your products will appear in various prime locations on Google:

  • The Shopping tab
  • Under “Shopping” ads in the regular search results
  • In visual product overviews, also known as Organic Product Grids (especially on mobile)

The Difference Between Paid and Organic Shopping Results

Although paid and organic product listings look very similar, there are a number of important differences:

Feature Google Shopping (paid) Google Organic Shopping
Visibility At the top of search results and the Shopping tab Below ads + in the Shopping tab
Costs Cost per click (CPC) Free
Control High (through campaigns and bidding strategies) Lower, depending on optimization
Feed Required Yes Yes
Can the ranking be influenced? Yes, through budget and bids No, depending on the algorithm

While Shopping Ads give you control over targeting and bids, Organic Shopping is less transparent, and youโ€™re at the mercy of Googleโ€™s algorithm. Itโ€™s a new arena within SEO and an interesting development, which makes it an intriguing SEO channel.

How Does Google Organic Shopping Work?

Visibility in Google Organic Shopping is determined by the information in your product feed, combined with the content and structured data on your website. So this isnโ€™t about standard ranking factors like those for pages in regular search results, but rather a combination of:

  1. Your product feed in Merchant Center. Google uses this to retrieve product information such as price, availability, brand, and GTIN.
  2. Structured data on product pages. Schema markup allows you to provide Google with additional context, such as reviews, delivery times, return information, and product variants.
  3. Indexable and optimized product pages. Without crawlable and indexable product pages, you wonโ€™t gain visibility in Organic Shopping. The pages must therefore be technically sound and offer added value to your users.

Google then displays these products in places where users show a clear intent to buy. For example:

  • Product listings in the Shopping tab
  • Free product listings under Shopping Ads
  • Increasingly, this is also the case in visually appealing organic product grids on mobile devices

Organic product grids are new visual storefronts

These product grids aren’t ads, but they do look like them. Think of rows of products that appear for search queries like โ€œbest noise-canceling headphonesโ€ or โ€œcomfortable office chair.โ€ Products are automatically displayed based on relevance, structured data, and optimization.

For online stores, this offers an opportunity to gain visibility in a highly trafficked and eye-catching SERP featureโ€”without an advertising budget.

What are the requirements for being visible?

To be eligible for Organic Shopping, your online store must be technically well-set up and comply with Googleโ€™s guidelines. The most important requirements for gaining visibility are:

1. Active product feed via Google Merchant Center

You need a product feed linked to Merchant Center. Without a feed, you cannot participateโ€”not even in the free listings. Please note: When setting up your feed, you must check the box indicating that you also want your products to appear in the free listings.

2. Indexable product pages

Make sure your product pages arenโ€™t blocked in the robots.txt file and donโ€™t contain any noindex tags. Only pages that Google can crawl and index are eligible. In practice, we often see online stores make this mistake, for example with product variants. Adding a canonical URL to another page is allowed, but a โ€œdisallowโ€ or โ€œnoindexโ€ tag is not.

Are your products not indexable? If so, by definition, they will not be displayed in an Organic Shopping grid. That is why this is an important requirement.

3. Adding structured data (Schema.org) to product pages

Use the Product structured data markup to help Google understand your product information. This includes details such as price, inventory, reviews, SKU, GTIN, and more. Structured data is important for appearing in product grids.

4. Complete and up-to-date product information in your feed

The quality of your feed is important for gaining visibility, so make sure to:

  • Clear titles with relevant keywords
  • Descriptions that match user intent
  • Correct GTINs, SKUs, brands, and product categories
  • Current price and inventory information

5. A Good User Experience

Although Organic Shopping works differently than โ€œregular SEO,โ€ the quality of your site does play a role. Think of a mobile-friendly online store that loads quickly and is easy to use. Clear navigation also ensures a positive user experience and thus plays a role in your visibility in Organic Shopping.

6. The reliability of your online store

In addition to a good user experience, Google also considers how trustworthy your online store appears to be. Trust is a key factor in how users interact with your site, and that behavior is factored into Googleโ€™s algorithms, such as Navboost. As a result, products from trustworthy online stores are more likely to appear in Organic Shopping.

Key factors for the reliability of your online store are:

  • Displaying your business information, such as contact details and a customer service page.
  • Displaying a legal notice (for the German market).
  • Transparency regarding return policies and payments.
  • Collecting and displaying product reviews through a recognized review platform.
  • The use of an SSL connection, which, fortunately, is now the standard.
  • Avoiding ambiguity, cluttered layouts, intrusive pop-ups, or hidden terms and conditions.

7. Enabling the free listings

The most important thing of all is to enable the free listings through Merchant Center. Without this option, you won’t appear in Organic Shopping. So don’t forget this step!

What factors influence your visibility in Organic Shopping?

Google does not disclose information about exactly how the Organic Shopping algorithm works. Based on practical experience and external sources such as Brodie Clark and Google itself, we know that the following factors are taken into account:

  • Relevance of Titles and Descriptions
  • Structured data (accurate and complete)
  • Quality of Your Product Images
  • Reviews and star ratings (via verified review platforms)
  • The click-through rate (CTR) of your products
  • User signals on the product page (Navboost)
  • The store quality you see in Merchant Center

In other words: the better you align with search intent and the more solid your technical foundation is, the greater your chances of visibility.

Why Is Organic Shopping Important for Online Stores?

Google Organic Shopping is no longer just a โ€œnice-to-haveโ€ for online stores, but an important channel that can make a valuable contribution to your SEO strategy and growth. Especially if youโ€™re already investing in search engine optimization or e-commerce marketing, taking Organic Shopping seriously is a logical next step.

Below, we’ve listed the key benefits for you, along with explanations:

1. Free extra visibility on Google

Organic product listings ensure that your products are visible in places where normally only paid ads are shownโ€”such as below the Shopping Ads or in the Shopping tab. You donโ€™t pay for clicks, impressions, or placement. This makes Organic Shopping an accessible way to expand your presence on Google without having to allocate additional media budget.

2. A Higher ROI on Your Existing SEO Investment

Are you already actively working on SEO? If so, Organic Shopping is a great way to further improve your results. Product pages that already rank well in organic search results can also appear in shopping listings with the right structured data and a good product feed. This allows you to make the most of your content and get a higher return on your existing efforts.

3. You can showcase your entire product line

In paid Shopping campaigns, only the best-performing products are often featured, due to budget constraints or campaign ROI. With Organic Shopping, however, you can showcase your entire product lineup, including niche products or items with lower margins. This increases the likelihood that customers will find exactly the product theyโ€™re looking for.

4. Equal Opportunities for Small and Medium-Sized Online Stores

While paid channels are often dominated by major players with large budgets, Organic Shopping actually offers opportunities for smaller online stores. By optimizing your online store, you can compete on quality and relevance, not on media budget. That makes it a more level playing field for those who have their content and technical SEO in order.

5. Synergy with Paid Shopping

Organic Shopping complements your paid campaigns perfectly. By combining both channels, you can increase your visibility, improve your overall click-through rate, and gain more control over the entire customer journey on Google. In addition, data from Organic Shopping can provide insights for your paid strategy (e.g., which titles and images perform well).

Our tip: Use a separate feed for Organic Shopping

Although you can use a single product feed in Google Merchant Center to display products in both paid and organic results, in many cases we recommend using a separate feed specifically for Organic Shopping. Why? Because it gives your online store more control and flexibility, and it allows you to include all your products in Organic Shopping results.

When is a separate feed a good idea?

  1. If you don’t advertise your entire product lineup. You can also include products that you don’t advertise, which helps you gain more visibility without incurring additional advertising costs.
  2. If you want to use different content or titles for SEO, use longer, search-optimized titles in your organic feed without affecting the performance of your ads.
  3. If you want to implement visual optimizations or test different images, choose different images for each product that perform better in organic product grids, such as lifestyle photos or alternative angles.
  4. If you want to test and experiment, try out different titles, brands, or category descriptions without putting your paid campaigns at risk.

Using a separate feed isnโ€™t a requirement to get started, but it is a valuable next step if you want more control over your organic visibility. For online stores that already have their technical foundation in order, this offers an opportunity to optimize in a targeted way without affecting your paid campaigns.
